Congratulations to the 2020-2021 Vic & Oby Scholarship Fund Award recipients! We were so impressed with the number and quality of applications we received, we had to add more recipients and bonus scholarship awards.
Doyin Cole
Doyin Cole (Pictured above) – Doyin will be studying to obtain a Nursing degree from Normandale Community College this fall. She is a Nigerian immigrant and a straight A student who spends her free time volunteering at her local church. Her goal is to use her nursing degree to advocate for access to health care for the less privileged. Doyin’s application was so concise, personable and impressive, the decision to make her a recipient was immediately unanimous among the Review Committee.
Michael Gill
Michael Gill (Pictured above) – Michael will be pursuing a doctorate degree in Medicine from Georgetown University School of Medicine. He is a child of immigrants from India and Peru. Inspired by his parents’ hard work and resilience, Michael continued to rise above personal challenges to achieve academic excellence and pursue his dream of being a medical doctor.
Iris Ung
Iris Ung (Pictured above)- Iris will be attending Stanford University this fall to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Science. She graduated from high school with a 4.67 GPA and was ranked first out of her class of 514. She is a member of the National Honor Society and has received a plethora of awards for her academic excellence and distinction. Iris is also part of various organizations and is heavily involved with activities in her community. Iris is a child to Cambodian immigrant parents.
Norma Garcia
Norma Garcia (Pictured above) – Norma will be pursuing a Political Science Bachelor of Science degree from University of Berkeley, California this fall. She is a child to Mexican immigrants. She graduated from high school as the Salutatorian of her class, with a 4.5 GPA and ranked 2 nd out of her class of 110. She intends to ultimately pursue a career in human rights.
Ryan Keith Gavino
Ryan Keith Gavino (Pictured above) – Michael is an immigrant from the Philippines. He will be pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing at the University of Texas this fall. He ranked 1 st of out his high school class of 456 and graduated as his class Valedictorian. Ryan is also a member of the National Honor Society, and a top student in most of his classes. He spends his free time volunteering at his local church.
